Emmer (Triticum turgidum subsp. dicoccum)

Emmer wheat is one of the first domesticated crops. It is not free threshing (the glumes remain around the grains), but belongs to the same tetraploid species as durum wheat. It can be grown on poor soils, where other wheats do not give a good harvest. Long straws. Each spikelet has two grains. Emmer wheat has awns of different length. There are both winter and spring varieties.
