Tomatoes of the Piennolo type can be stored for a long time (often 6-9 months), because they have thick skins. Piennolo tomatoes come from Campania, around Vesuvius and Naples. There are similar tomato varieties in other countries and other parts of Italy too, e.g. Spain and Puglia. Towards the end of the growing season the tomatoes are hung in clusters and picked as they ripen.
