Grows in perennial tufts of thin hollow rounded leaves. The leaves are cut and usually used fresh.
In the summer a flower stalk emerges with a ball of pink flowers at the top. The flowers are also edible and decorative in salads, and apart from chives they also taste a bit of honey. The flower stalks quickly become hard, but can be used for food while they are still soft, i.e. about until the bud at the top has not opened. The flower stalks should be cut before they start setting seeds, tso tha plant does not waste energy on that (unless you specifically want seeds for sowing).
Chives can be propagated either with seeds or by splitting the tufts. It grows wild in large parts of Europe.
