Henrik Norbeck's Plant Culture

Spelt (Triticum aestivum subsp. spelta)

Folkärna speltvete

This is a landrace with an interesting story. At the farm Ollasgården in Bäsinge in the parish of Folkärna in southern Dalarna, Sven Erik Eriksson found some seeds in 2016. These were at least from 1974, when his uncle gave up farming, and probably much older. He sowed them (about half a litre of grains), and 10 of them germinated! The results of this sowing have since been propagated.
This variety is autumn sown and matures very early. Started flowering about a week before any other winter spelt, emmer or bread wheat that I grow. 120-135 cm tall.
Like many landraces this variety is rather variable. Some ears have awns, some don't.
